Dammit Jim! I’m a Doctor, not a Swordfighter!

No, Bones, was not a swordfighter but he was very very passionate about what he did. He took great pride in his work. He pushed the envelope. He had fun. And that is something as swordfighters that we must also do.

If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.

That sentiment is echoed through so many fighters throughout so many Kingdoms. You have to enjoy this. You have to love getting into armor on a hot sunny day and hitting and getting hit back with a stick. Only a crazy person would do this without loving it!

There are many people who try to analyze fighting and put specific labels on it. Women vs. Men. Strong vs. Fast. Sword and shield vs. two swords (or other weapon of choice). I think it boils down to being passionate. Passion will get you through those days where you think you stink. It will whisper in your ear telling you to practice and it will feed you daydreams of glory on the Field.

I see all fighters as the same whether men or women. There are some that are tall, short, strong, fast, new, veteran, belted, unbelted. I don’t buy into the whole idea of the ‘lizard brain’. If that term is new to you, it’s the idea that women have “inner demons and baggage” that can prevent them from hitting people because we are the ‘nurturing sex’.

Baloney.

That term has done more to hurt female fighters than it has done to help them. From everything I’ve heard from women that use it, it’s used as an excuse. “I can’t do this or that because of the lizard brain – it’s not in my nature….”.  Then you probably shouldn’t fight. You do yourself a huge disservice by placing these limits on yourself.

You are a fighter. Period. It may take longer to get used to the idea of hitting people than others. I guarantee you there are men that experience that. But, if that passion is truly within you, you will overcome. Don’t fall back on ‘Society says this’ excuses. You are in complete control of what you do, not anyone else.

If you decide that you want to fight, git ‘er done! Somehow I don’t think Bones would have stood by as someone told him he shouldn’t develop new surgical procedures on the human brain. (Yes, I realize Bones is a fictional character. And Yes, I realize I know way too much about Star Trek!).

If you want a real life example, what if someone had told the people back in 1966 that their idea of a medieval organization would never take hold. Can you imagine going back in time and telling them that what they did on that day would result in a world-wide organization with over 30,000 members? Cool huh?

Fight because you can’t think of not fighting. Fight because the passion burns deep within you. You will have obstacles. You will have days where you think you cannot do it. But you will also have glorious days. And days filled with such awesomeness that you can’t contain the awesome!

And always, always, share what you know. Teaching what others have taught you is a great way to honor those teachers. Love what you do, do what you love.

Lay on!
